"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you."
I love this quote from Maya Angelou. Stories have power and everyone has a story to tell. As humans we crave to share parts of our life with each other and when we can't we feel silenced and often forgotten about. This is when an agony begins to shape inside.
One thing I have all my transgender, gender non-binary, LGBQ+, and youth clients do is journal, blog, vlog, letter writing, or something of this variation. I always start out by asking them to write to themselves. If they are youth I have them write to their future selves. If they are a young adult or an adult I have them write to their past and future selves.
This can be a very emotional assignment because it causes the writer to really look into themselves and the world they have experienced. I often see a lot of pain and heartbreak when they first begin to write.
However, I also see a lot of strength that has sometimes been forgotten. This is when they get the chance to see not just the hardships but the perseverance, strength, and confidence that was shaped in this fire.
If you feel like you are not worthy, weird, alone, or anything else please know that you are not alone and that there are people just like you out there.
We need you and your story. You are strong, you are worthy, and you are not alone.
Below is a YouTube video of Fox sending a message to his 10 year old self. Take a look and I encourage you to do something similar.
