You may ask yourself:
What if I’m LGBTQ+ AND a geek, and are there others out there like me?
The answer is yes!
There is an intersection between LGBTQ+ folk and geekdom, and it is a growing culture of openness and celebration. For example, the organization Geeks Out serves to promote the LGBTQ+ voice in geek culture. If you’re reading this blog, I’m going to connect you with information and resources out there depending on your question—there are a lot out there!
So how are LGBTQ+ folks portrayed in geek culture?
LGBTQ+ portrayal in geekdom is varied, and often when queer characters make their way into popular media the topic becomes a source of controversy. There are many people writing about representation of queer geeks in popular movies, TV shows, and graphic novels. Check out Joe Glass’ article on Bleeding Cool for a closer look.
Video gaming culture especially is under fire right now as people begin to openly talk about some of the biases and harmful stereotypes found in games. Bitch Media wrote a blog interviewing three LGBT gamers to lay out some of these nuances.
There was even a panel at Comic Con this past year in which experts discussed these significant portrayals in media.
Are there any idols or role models I can look up to?
Are there any queer geek conventions out there?
Yes! Queer geek conventions are popping up all over to celebrate the LGBTQ+ creators and fans. Take a look at a list of queer geek conventions around the nation here to find one near you.
Or, for my local readers, check out the one in Austin, Texas called Haven Con!
